 Mercy Seat

The Mercy Seat

Ps 99:1 The LORD reigns; let the peoples tremble! He dwells between the cherubim; let the earth be moved!

Above is a sketch I made of the Mercy Seat or lid of the Ark of the Covenant that God told the Israelites to make.

The Mercy Seat was made of solid gold. At each end of the Mercy Seat were two golden Cherubim facing each other. Their wings overshadowed the lid and touched each other while their faces were always looking down upon the Mercy seat.

The Mercy seat was where the High Priest came and sprinkled the blood of the animal sacrifices for the atonement of his sins and the sins of the nation. It was where he met with God and where God spoke with him. It symbolized the place of forgiveness and grace.

Exodus 25:22 "And there I will meet with you, and I will speak with you from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are on the ark of the Testimony, about everything which I will give you in commandment to the children of Israel."

In the New Testament Jesus Christ is called our Mercy Seat.

The word for "mercy seat" is the same root for the word "atonement."

When Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins, He became the living sacrifice for our sins. This is why He is called “The Lamb of God.”

The word “Atonement” means to cover, cancel, appease, or cleanse. The Greek equivalent is the word "propitiation."

1 John 2:2 “And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.”

Bible History.com says: “The mercy seat protected man from the judgment of God represented by the judgment angels, the Cherubim. Because of the blood that was sprinkled on the mercy seat, man's sin and guilt were washed away and the curse of the law has no effect.

The mercy seat foreshadows the Lord Jesus Christ. He is our mercy seat. He forever stands between a holy God and sinful man. Just as the sins of the whole nation were atoned for by the sprinkling of the blood on the mercy seat, so also Christ, by the shedding of His own blood atoned for the sins of the entire world.”

A Merciful Redeemer, Savior, And Eternal High Priest

Jesus is our merciful eternal High Priest who faithfully prays for each one of us day and night. He carries each of our burdens to His Heavenly Father and intercedes for us.

“But (Jesus Christ), because he lives forever, has his priesthood unchangeable. Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, seeing that he lives forever to make intercession for them.” ~ Hebrews 7:24-25

Our Savior not only suffered an agonizing, humiliating death on the cross for each one of us so that we might be forgiven our sins and cleansed from all our unrighteousness, He also daily bears all our burdens by praying for our needs and representing our interests to His Heavenly Father.

Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, yes rather, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.”

 How do we know this?

It is revealed in His Word, which cannot lie.

Jesus Christ said, Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” ~Matthew 24:35

“If God is for us, who can be against us? ”~ Romans 8:31

Jesus Christ said, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him.” John 3:16-17

1 John 4:8 says, “God is love.”   It says in 2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord…is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

Our Creator loves us with immeasurable love. If He spared not His only Son in order to redeem us from the curse of sin and death and be able to dwell forever with Him in eternal Paradise, what else would He not also do for us?

He will never fail or forsake us. He gives to us an amazing gift once we invite His Son to live inside our hearts. He downloads a portion of His own Holy Spirit to live in us, to be with us forever!

“Jesus said, ‘I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever,  the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive; for it doesn’t see him, neither knows him. You know him, for he lives with you, and will be in you.” John 13:16-17

“Jesus answered him, ’If a man loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our home with him.’” ~John 13:23

“Jesus said, “However when he, the Spirit of truth, has come, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he hears, he will speak. He will declare to you things that are coming. He will glorify me, for he will take from what is mine, and will declare it to you.” ~ John 16:13-14

You become an actual Temple of the Holy Spirit, the bible says, when you ask Jesus to live in your heart. Just like the ancient Ark of the Covenant was where the living Holy Presence dwelled, you have the living Holy Presence of God within you! And He will be there forever.

Night and day through every storm you face along your path, in times of joy, or pain, your God will never leave you. He will guide you in everything you do with His beautiful love by His Holy Spirit.

All you have to do is ask for His wisdom.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed.” ~James 1:5-6

PRAYER OF SALVATION

If you have never asked Jesus Christ into your heart and would like to do so, you can pray this simple prayer and He will come to live inside of you and will fill you with His Holy Spirit.

“Dear Lord Jesus,

Please come into my heart

And make Your home in me.

Thank you, for dying on the cross

To save me.

Please forgive me for all my sins,

Cleanse my heart,

Redeem me.

Fill me with Thy Holy Spirit

And make me Yours forever.

In Your name, Lord Jesus,

I pray,

Amen.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

…for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” ~Romans 10:9-13

 Your New Life In Christ

Once you pray and ask the Lord Jesus Christ to come live in your heart, He does!

You are now His child. He forgives all your sins, He records your name in His Book of Life and you are given eternal life.

Jesus Christ freely gives you His own righteousness.

When the Heavenly Father looks at you, He sees you as clean and righteous as His Son. That is because you are given Christ’s righteousness as a free gift. You cannot earn your way to Heaven by good works. That is why Christ had to die for you and me. He alone could fulfill the righteous standards of the Law. He alone was perfect. We never could have been good enough because we are sinners from birth.

Our first parents (Adam and Eve) sinned and passed their sin heritage on to us.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.” ~Ephesians 2:8-9

Abiding in Christ

Becoming a new Christian involves adopting a new way of life. You have invited Your Holy Creator to live within you, to be your best Friend.

You will want to please Him. He is as close as your breath.

  • Begin reading the Christian Bible. Find a good study Bible that will help you learn about your new faith. Pray and ask the Lord to guide you to just the right one. Read God's Word and pray to Jesus ever day. Don't stop abiding in Christ ever. Learn to know Him by walking in fellowship with Him through prayer and reading and obeying His word every single day. You do not learn to know God by reading other people's books about God. You learn to know Jesus by reading the Bible for yourself and praying to Jesus and allowing Him to teach you.

  • False teachers prey on those who don't read the Bible for themselves or allow Jesus to teach them. But Jesus said, "My sheep know My voice and they follow Me. I give them eternal life and they shall never perish and no one can snatch them out of My hand." John 10:27-28

  • Christ's sheep listen to HIS VOICE and follow HIM. It is those sheep who cannot be snatched from His hand.

  • “So then, brothers, stand firm, and hold the traditions which you were taught by us, whether by word, or by letter.” ~2 Thessalonians 2:15

  • “Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good.  Abstain from every form of evil.” ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22

  • Private Prayer Time with the Lord: This is how we grow closer to the Lord Jesus. Your love for Him will flourish and He will help you gain more insight into His word. He also will reveal His will and purpose for you as you grow closer to Him.

  • Prayer is loving Jesus. It can be interceding for others. It can be singing to the Lord. It can be many things. The Holy Spirit will guide you in worshiping God as you were created to.

  • As you pray and worship the Lord you will learn how to hear His voice. Jesus said,  My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.  I give eternal life to them. They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.  My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of my Father’s hand.  I and the Father are one.” ~ John 10:27-30

  • You learn how to hear the Lord’s voice through prayer and consistent Bible study. This is called abiding in Christ. You must also obey what you hear. This is called walking in the Spirit by faith. (See Romans 8)

  •

“Show me your ways, Yahweh.
    Teach me your paths.
Guide me in your truth, and teach me,
For you are the God of my salvation,
I wait for you all day long.” ~Psalm 25:4-5

What if We Sin?

God loves each one of us as if we were the only one to love.  He has died on the cross to prove His love for us. He has given us His own robe of righteousness to wear so that we stand before Him covered in His love.

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” ~ Romans 8:1

“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”~1 John 1:7-10

God provides for our forgiveness if we stumble. We will want to come to Him and confess the sin and He will always forgive us. Listen to this promise from Psalm 103.

“Praise Yahweh, my soul!
All that is within me, praise his holy name!

Praise Yahweh, my soul,
    and don’t forget all his benefits;

who forgives all your sins;
    who heals all your diseases;

who redeems your life

from destruction;
who crowns you with loving kindness

and tender mercies;

who satisfies your desire with good things,
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” ~Psalm 103:1-5

Psalm 130:3-4 makes this beautiful promise:

“If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.”

God Bears Our Burdens

We serve a wonderful God! He deserves all our praise!

Psalm 68:19 says this about our Creator:

“Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burdens,
even the God who is our salvation.”

“Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.” Psalm 55:22

“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.~1 Peter 5:6-7

The Lord is near.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. ~ Philippians 4:5-7

“ Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.” ~Hebrews 4:16

The Lord wants us to pray to Him! He loves to hear our prayers. So here in this Prayer Room, whether you need Salvation, or to unburden your heart to the Lord, to ask forgiveness, to seek for a need, cry out to God. Think of Jesus as your Mercy Seat for He is. Leave your burdens with Him. He told His disciples:

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” ~Matthew 11:28-30

My Prayer For You

Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that all those who are reading this may be blessed and filled right now with rivers of Thy holy peace and hope. May Thy Holy spirit fill & refresh their hearts and meet their every need. Thank You, Lord, I love You.  In Jesus’ holy name.  Amen.
